Yeah, it was a huge dichotomy in the therian community--I remember in the '10s that someone actually quit the Werelist because they didn't like people who believed in the psychological explanation, and I've heard other people say that coming down on the wrong side in a given community could have social repercussions.
Apparently the broader otherkin community inherited one of our less admirable traits.
I think it's become less of an issue in the therian community lately. In my experience it seems to be less salient these days, at least.
